Our activity was born in the first 1980s as a natural reserve supported by WWF and Lipu. It rapidly became a strategic point for watching the different bird species (for example pink flamingos) that reached Sale Porcus salt pan punctually every year.
In 2005 the same structure was taken over by another company, that converted it in a kind of rural tourism, that is a sort of residential hotel where lines, colours, perfumes, traditions are connected with the environment so to create a small slice of heaven where you can rejuvenate from everyday stress.
We were very concerned in the choice of our hotel name, because we didn’t want to be banal by choosing an inappropriate name. After months of discussions we had an insight: “we will call it menhirs” and this was our final choice.
This choice is due to the fact that Menhirs enclose the whole Sardinia’s History in just a word. Menhirs are megaliths, ancient stone statues dating back to the copper age and representing a man or a woman. They are meant to be as presents offered to the very important people of that time. They were the same as a statue erected as a tribute to Napoleon or, since we are in Sardinia, to Eleonora d’Arborea.
These statues are extremely fascinating because stories about their creation are told still today. Some scholars suppose they were made by aliens, others think that they are connected to the moon phases because of their placement on the ground, others believe they are linked to religion.
In our hotel we have reproduced some menhirs with the typical local stone, the sandstone, that is fossilized sand. The reason for this is that we want to promote Sardinia for both its fantastic sea and for its traditions, cultures and history. In fact culture and gastronomy tours will be suggested to discover Sardinia inland areas with their fantastic landscape, monuments and traditions.
Furthermore, we are in the peninsula of Sinis in west central Sardinia. The hotel is located between Is arenas bay in the North and Oristano’s Gulf in the south. West of the Sinis peninsula there are Mal di Ventre Island (in Sardinian language “Isula di Malu Entu”) and Catalano’s cliff (su Catalanu)
